Summary: "Error: failed to initialize HAL" message on Gnome
startup
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
URL: http://cl.naist.jp/~eric-n/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: hal
AssignedTo: martin.pitt at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: underspecified at gmail.com
QAContact: desktop-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
CC: underspecified at gmail.com
Running the latest Breezy development release on a 3.20 GHz Pentium 4 with
Hyperthreading (kernel 2.6.12-8-686-smp),
I am greeted with an "Error: failed to initialize HAL" message every time I
start Gnome. This renders the system
incapable of automounting DVDs, USB keys and the like. I am able to work around
this problem by dropping to a console
and restarting the dbus service before loging into Gnome, which suggests that
dbus is not properly initializing during
system startup. There are no error reports in dmesg. Where is a good place to
start looking for more information on the
cause of this error?
