I have exactly the same problem with Breezy, GNOME 2.12, for no apparent reason. 

I experienced it the first time after installing some programs (java, galeon).
Galeon didn't work correctly afterwards. But the more severe problem is that the
GNOME Settings Daemon always crashes. The error messages are exactly the same as
above. Desktop and Trash icon are replaced by a red "X", no matter what icon
theme I choose. Other Icons are also affected, the first seven icons in the
Places menu have disappeared.
