Oh yeah I'd like to add that the "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable" command worked
because I had the nvidia-glx package installed.

So another way to fix the problem is to log in to a failsafe terminal session
and type "sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx" and then "sudo nvidia-glx-config
enable". 

(I think a better solution is to change the installer so it defaults to the
"vesa" video driver instead of the "nv" driver)
