The problem occured when I installed a default Hoary installation (with the
included X drivers). I don't think it's a problem with the loopback because I
did a default installation and I didn't play with any of the settings. 

I solved the problem by choosing "expert mode" setup and then changing the
graphics driver from "nv" to "vesa".

I think that the graphics card driver should be "vesa" by default because it
supports more graphics cards and it can prevent this type of problem from
happening. Also, it's the default with other distros such as knoppix. 

And, I experienced this issue again when I installed all the updates using the
update tool. I solved it by logging into a failsafe terminal through GDM and
then typing "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable".
