So "lshal" produces output instead of throwing an error message? What does

 ps aux|grep hald

show? Please do "lshal > lshal.txt" and attach the resulting lshal.txt here.

This could very well be a hanging hal.

It would be really nice if you or your friend could login into a text console
(or you start it over ssh in a root shel) and start hald in debugging mode, as
described on

It would be interesting to see whether there is any output that corresponds to
the "gnome panel appears" event.
