I believe there are times we use it as a from address (for example
bzr-email sending out an email when you commit). It was originally
more about having other people contact you. (In an opensource case it
is useful to know who made a change, and who you can contact.)

There is also a little bit of code that uses it with Launchpad:
 self.registrant_email = the_config.user_email()

But it is generally for human consumption rather than programs.
