Yeah, you're right we should consider it in the light of any other
format changes we'd like to make. Certainly a new major version seems a
good time for a format change. Not that I'm particularly keen on doing
one. Certainly not without better infrastructure for handling the
upgrades that we have at the moment.
Of course, another thing we could do is stick with the backwards
compatible format for now and then fix the performance issue (which will
only affect people with lots of colocated branches anyway) during the
next format bump.
