True, but for all the pain that involves [and yes, we've been there],
you are talking about a major release, 3.0. Perhaps the community will
accept that the opportunity to add new features would need to be
accompanied by a format break.

(ie, you don't get to do that very often, but I know there's a queue of
things that want breaking, so perhaps this is your occasion)
