bzr help and less don't seem to play well...

That sounds like either something's strange in the terminal mode, or
bzr is reading from stdin at the same time as less and 'fighting' for
the input characters.  I can't reproduce this though.  If you get an
strace of the bzr process and file a bug that might help.
