Well why not have an unstable trunk where developers can work as you
suggest and a stable one where everything passes all tests? Just because
you use a gatekeeper doesn't mean that's the only workflow that you
should use. It's just a workflow that can guarantee a certain level of
quality assurance - which I assumed was desired. If you're not
interested in that for certain branches then you don't need to use it
and can just commit there directly.
