I think for this kind of situation you really do want to use "px" for font size.
You are, after all, expecting the text to fit within a fixed-pixel area.
It's quite common to use "px" pretty much globally for screen fonts, anyway.
Modern browsers have a zoom feature that changes the scale of the entire
rendered page (not just the font size), so it's not really an accessibility
issue from my perspective.
