The problem here is that this is not a choice between styles of
presentation, the buttons are different so the functionality is
different.

I like the idea of a website search so Design 2 works better for me.

Not really sure. It is a lot of space for a marketing feature.

Design 1 has the list of entries at the bottom which is for me a good
thing. Design 2 is totally deficient in this respect.

However I am not convinced the box for whizzy features of the latest
release is best use of space.

NB I don't like dark blue. Is the use of blue supposed to echo the
blue in the Linux Foundation logo? Why use the dark blue instead of the
light blue?

The huge contrast between the top banner and the page in Design 1
irritates me. The two stage change of colour in Design 2 gets rid of
the huge contrast.

Design 2 suffers from having the "Lorem ipsum . . ." content where
Design 1 has proper content. This means this not an unbiased
experiment.

Design 2 is basically too boring in structure, Design 1 is more
interesting -- though the use of icons is probably the siggle major
factor here and could be done for Design 2.

Basically I prefer Design 2 in many ways and Design 1 in others.

I am not really a fan of either.
