Please no, for exactly the reason you point out -- stdout should
not be cluttered with extraneous stuff.

Yikes!
Perhaps a nice bell (or is it a whistle? :-)) But I'm guessing
that the usefulness of it will be greatly decreased once progress
reporting's other kinks have been worked out.
Besides, this sounds like a hugely invasive change -- far more so
than for a simple utility like tar.
