[MERGE] Use a helper function where only one revision is required

When working on adding a revision option to switch, I noticed that there
were a number of commands that were using an almost identical idiom to
get a single revision from the revision being passed in.  The attached
extracts this into a helper function and converts all of the obvious
places where the idiom is being used.
