Aptitude rocks. Even though it is a mere ncurses application instead of
an trivially graphical Gnome one, I still believe it is the only package
management tool that can track automatic installation so that
automatically installed packages are removed when all packages that
depend on it are gone. Synaptic doesn't do this as far as I know.
Certainly update-manager doesn't properly handle this issue. gnome-apt
is alpha software and is guaranteed to damage your setup (so it says in
its start up splash screen anyway). Is there anything else?

Certainly apt keeps a cache of downloaded debs, but as soon as you run
apt-get clean the cache is emptied. The problem is that these are not
available as part of the UI, you have to go in and copy them to a local
deb repository and index it. The upshot is that given the current lack
of capability of PPA, the only sane strategy is to download release debs
from there to a local repository and install from there and not to
install direct from the PPA.

(BTW I actually use apt-proxy so as top minimize the number of downloads
for my five Ubuntu machines so everything is a bit more complicated.)

I guess I should have preplanned for the lack of capability of PPA
compared to a real deb repository -- so I guess it is all my fault :-)
