Consistent use of -f/-d type option to specify subject of operation

--directory doesn't seem like a good name for the option.  If the
biggest need is for specifying URLs, we shouldn't use an option name
that implies a local path.  So when I wrote `send`, I went with
something more accurate, after discussion with Martin.
