You *could* go alphabetical, but allow it to not require only the first
letter to be different.

For example:
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/animals/Animalbabies.shtml

Then you get:

Alligator
Alpaca
Antelope
Ape
Armadillo

All in the "A" section. With the downside that it is even harder to sort
them in your head.
