[merge] better try/finally blocks in readdir_pyx

I noticed while looking at John's readdir fix that we should be a bit
more careful of an error occurring after chdir in readdir_pyx.  It's
unlikely to happen, but being stuck in the wrong directory would be
pretty confusing.
