I think you underestimate the value of compatibility. I still have
branches laying around from a while ago. 2 years isn't really that long
to want to come back to hack on some software you didn't need to work on
in the meantime.

I would be fine with *hiding* the formats, so that you don't see them
when doing "bzr help init", but I think supporting them internally is a
great boon to us, rather than a hindrance.
