Or perhaps 1.7. The 1.6 release changes a lot of things and is
therefore likely to have more than its share of bugs.

I guess the solutions you mention below will allow us to upgrade easily.

Yes, that would definitely be a nice thing. Filed as bug 251691.

I'm not sure we can do this for sftp access, but it'd be good for http
and bzr+ssh.
