The OP didn't ask for preserving history. He asked if it was possible to
change metadata (the commit-message in particular) of an existing branch.

Which works, but isn't very comfortable.

I'd love to see a plugin which makes editing Metadata of an existing
branch easier. This can be usful for polishing an not-yet-published
branch before publishing it.
