It sounds like me that an option to not find the main line revisions
would be useful. This would provide a workaround for the performance
problems right now wouldn't it?

Ideally though, bzr should be able to do what it does but much more
quickly. I would think adding the option to turn this off for now would
be the simplest solution but I don't know the code so I may be wrong -
I'm hoping there is just a simple change to the algorithm that can make
it much more efficient.
