Is that a deep problem in Arch that can't be fixed?  or a
problem only at the moment since nobody has found resources
to work on it?

If the basic Arch idea of how to keep history makes a lot of
sense, as you seem to agree it does, and if it doesn't look that
hard to improve Arch to do it really well -- why not spend
volunteer labor on that, rather than on messing around in
some ad hoc way with some other DVCS?

Arch is *tiny* both in source lines and in complexity.
It's malleable.  Use it!
