Yes, it was a really neat trick, but after having used it, it has
significant shortcomings, most importantly disk space used, inode space
used, unreliability (tho it's fairly minor), and performance cost due to
the added disk/inode count.

A bit of special-handling for that data to keep it in fewer files and in
compressed form would have a gone a long way to make it a lot better.
