That's because it's DE-specific; in XFCE I can use Alt+F4 to close the 
window, in Fluxbox it switches virtual desktops by default, AFAIR, and I 
don't know how Gnome or KDE  behave.

On the other side, ctrl+w is widely used to close 
subwindows/tabs/documents (and unfortunately also to delete words in 
bash/vim/etc, but that's another story), q and ctrl+q are widely used to 
quit apps; it's good to stick to key combinations people are accustomed 
with.

oh, and f4 is so far away from alt... ;)
