I think that it's a great feature that branches can be read over plain
http, and part of my motivation for suggesting a pack-like at the London
sprint was to make dumb transports almost as good as smart ones for pull.

I think lock-free repos are compelling for large projects that run their
own servers.  I think http support is compelling for small projects that
don't run their own servers.

So maybe we can let people choose between http support and lock-free
repos as a format option?

That would be tragic, since pack-based formats will make plain http much
better.
