[RFC] revert commit progress output?

I don't find the commit progress output changes to be an improvement.  I
could eyeball the old progress output.  I have to read this version.

I know there were flaws in the old progress bars, but I don't think the
problem was the bar.  It was the other things the output said.

So I propose reverting commit progress output to the old format.  We
don't have to get rid of progress bars to improve our progress indications.
