Behavior seems to vary.  Thunderbird preserves the source line endings,
for example.

Absolutely.  We didn't anticipate this problem when developing the
original format, so the current format is vulnerable to these problems.
This experience led me to develop that patch-rio format in such a way
that it could withstand the forms of whitespace-munging that we know of.

Plans for the next-generation bundle format would make it also
impervious to whitespace-munging.
