You could do that, but then you wouldn't be able to revert back to
earlier versions, because split moves the tree root (it makes a
sudirectory into the tree root).

I'd suggest doing it the old-fashioned way for now:

bzr branch talks aps-200704
cd aps-200704
rm lsc-200703 -R
bzr mv aps-200704/* .
rmdir aps-200704
