As Martin said, email address is mostly a human-readable
worldwide-unique identifier for a person. In centralized systems
(cvs, svn), you only need locally-unique identifiers, so the login name
can be enough, but in distributed systems, you can not guess whether
someone will ever work on a branch with the same login name as you one
day.
If you want to be able to contact the developers, it's probably better
to have a AUTHORS or CONTACT file within the tree. It can be
interesting to mention previous email addresses in this file to have
the mapping email-id -> actual person.
