[MERGE] commit/push/pull/uncommit hooks, and pull --overwrite into a checkout.

I'd like to merge the current branch, since it doesn't regress anything,
and does have references from NEWS to the authoritative documentation.

I'll do a documentation file, and change the hooks api to make them
contain documentation which can be output from help - but I dont have
time to do that this week.
