[MERGE 0/3] Towards XML log output

Hi all,

After a long hiatus I picked up the work on the XML log output, and
almost have something mergeable. I have split the work up to make it
easier to review, so following are a bunch of MERGE requests for the
work. The last one isn't really a request yet, as though all the tests
pass the xml logger isn't mergeable yet, as I know it doesn't work, but
more of that in the appropriate email.

Here is what you have to look forward to

  * 1/3 - Remove some code duplication in the tests that I stumbled
    across. Not really part of my work, and quite trivial, so I kept it
    separate.

  * 2/3 - Refactor LogFormatter to allow the XmlLogFormatter the
    information it needs to work. This involves a deprecation period for
    show_log.

  * 3/3 - An implementation of the xml output. I imagine it will take a
    couple of implementations to get it merged, and I think the
    structure should be defined before it is, but that is quite easy to
    adjust.
