It is unmaintained, but it's done Keep-alive since 2004 (though the code 
I used may not be enabled
by default). I've also found it very reliable.

I guess someone should look at the code to see how much can be 
cannibalized. I expect quite a lot
can be, and it would certainly help to get it in sooner rather than 
later (with DIY). So far with bzr,
these connection problems have been my biggest problem by a long shot...
