[merge] remove some more mutters

Bzr mutters quite a bit when doing just about anything. This became a
real problem for me when running a benchmark that sets up a somewhat
bigger tree, because all the mutters ultimately end up in memory after
the test has run and I was running out of RAM.

The attached bundle comments some more mutters out, that were executed
particularly often. I can't really judge whether they are that useful or
not, feel free to object.
