This is a small update to the previous patch. It handles EPIPE (for the
case when 'ssh' quits faster than we can ask it to talk to another
server). And it updates the tests to reserve a port and use it, rather
than expecting port 1 to be unused. (Because we never listen, we can
guarantee that there will never be someone to connect to on the other end).

These changes were recommended by Robert. Still seeking a +1 to merge.
