I find easy_install great for unpackaged software, when you're using a
Virtual Python layout within your home directory.  That doesn't solve the
problem of multiple versions of software, but it does make sure you're not
interfering with the package manager.  I could never condone using
easy_install as it comes out of the box, though, and never as root.
