New ignore glob matcher for 0.8

At this point I'd like only bug or performance fixes that are fairly  
low risk.  If someone is able to separate out only those aspects we  
could look at it.  Otherwise it can come in immediately afterwards,  
and we will try to do a smaller release during May.
