When I see "--trees", I think "Well, what about trees?" Options like
"--format" or "--lightweight" seem to describe the output in a way that
"--trees" doesn't, and "--with-trees" does.
We talk about "format 5 branches", or "lightweight checkouts", but I'd
say "repository with trees", not "tree repository" or "trees repository".
But like I say, not a deal breaker either way.
