I hope that that will be somewhat less toasted with phase2, and
untoasted with phase3.

direct weave access is going completely when versionedfile lands, but
yes I understand.

Yes indeed. I version my plugins with releases - I'm happy to update a
'.dev' version and a 'last release' branch of my plugins, but not
arbitrarily deep ones.
