I'm inclined to go with John here, despite PEP 8 (and despite it
generally being a good thing to follow PEP 8). The justification given
there is that some filesystems truncate long names. That is not true
for any platform we run on or are likely to run on. So it's trumped by
the meta-rule that readability is more important.
