Debian stable (sarge) has python2.4. Do you mean oldstable (woody)?

I'm running sarge + bzrweb on my webserver without any special
packages/backports/whatever.

feanor:/home/vezult# apt-cache policy python2.4
python2.4:
  Installed: 2.4.1-2
  Candidate: 2.4.1-2
  Version Table:
 *** 2.4.1-2 0
        500 http://linux.mirrors.layeredtech.com sarge/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
