I applied this patch to try it out.  But I can't get it to work:

$ bzr annotate README
bzr: float argument required
  at /home/jrydberg/src/bzr.dev/bzrlib/progress.py:43 in progress_bar()
  see ~/.bzr.log for debug information

As well as:

$ bzr annotate CHANGELOG
bzr: error: can't look up file_id None
  at /home/jrydberg/src/bzr.dev/bzrlib/inventory.py:383 in __getitem__()
  see ~/.bzr.log for debug information

I also have your latest merge-patch applied, but I think that should
not affect this.

Let me know if you like the .bzr.log's, and I'll send them to you in
private mail.
