spam on commits list

I'm subscribed but I don't know that I've submitted anything. (I don't
really want to spam everyone with all of my commits/my smtp server is
configured to only work with a username+password).

I would say subscription only is okay. Just like other mailing lists
where the post is rejected unless they are subscribed to the list. I'm
not sure if that is different from what you are considering.
