Allowing Nautilus Extensions outside of /opt?

I have submitted an application for review and it contains a Nautilus
extension. The guidelines for application submission states that pretty
much all of the application's files need to go into /opt/
extras.ubuntu.com/[name]. There was an exception (if I remember correctly)
for .desktop files.

Nautilus extensions that are written in Python (which is the case with
mine) have a specific location that they must be placed in:
/usr/share/nautilus-python/extensions. Unfortunately this causes errors
when running arb-lint on the application.

I was talking with Andrew Mitchell in #ubuntu-arb on Freenode and he
suggested sending this email to facilitate discussion of this issue.
