              <p>Are you using a commercial display driver  eg Nvidia 
                or Radeon, if so edit the grub line 
                GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=  and  add no acpi to the end
                of that line. taking out the 'quiet' so you can see the
                boot process and where it might be hanging up.<br>
              </p>
              <p>See if it will boot then and if it doesn't boot to the
                desktop and your your still looking at a black screen 
                then do a ctrl  F1 and at the terminal type sudo purge
                Nvidiia*.*  or the Radeon equivalent.  <br>
              </p>
              <p>see if that helps.  It will knock out the commercial
                graphics drivers and let Wayland take over.   I always
                remove quiet splash from the grub CMDLINE as I prefer to
                see any issues as the machine boots.</p>

    <p>Can I suggest then that you try editing the line I suggested and
      removing quiet splash and adding nomodset noacpi  in the past that
      has solved many boot issues for me</p>
