I tried Puny Geek's method (ref: below), creating the missing resume
file after mkswap. While the process seemed go to a successful
completion, /swap was gone after reboot. Not to mention, the
partition with /swap on it could no longer be "activated." I had to
delete and recreate the /swap partition. At this point, as discussed
previously, I'm ready to opt-out of an encrypted /swap but how do I
get rid of the traces of encrypted swap and the associated error
message at boot?

I had a similar problem to yours, and solved it by switching from UUID
to /dev/disk/by-id/... in /etc/crypttab - you could try that and see if
it works for you also.

No fixes worked, including adding a wait during boot. I fell back to
using unencrypted swap on two laptops.
Thanks for the attempts.
