Hi Fred Yeah I'm having too much fun. I crashed my system 7 times now due to software that was not approved or wasn't ready or you know something, and I'm just learning that you gotta read read read read read FIRST! Hartmut has the best answer though the password is your user pw. Alternatively, though not advised, is to set the root password with: sudo passwd root this will then prompt you for a new password and root will be set. Word of caution, Ubuntu does NOT set the root password for security reasons. This is not advised on important systems but if you have a banger machine to play with then feel free to get a handle on root functions this way. There is very little you can't do through sudo fyi. After the password is set then you can issue the command: su - root Which will switch you over as a root; noted with a change in your prompt from "$" to "%".
