I have the same problem with my HP DM1 laptop.
Regular Ubuntu 14.04 got WIFI whereas Xubuntu 14.04 did not.

I just rebooted from Xubuntu to Ubuntu, without touching the "wifi"
key.
for the laptop I'm using now. It turns out that the
drivers that Xubuntu pulls down for Broadcom wifi cards
don't work and you have to unload them and load the
right ones. My wifi is Belkin which uses these

I can vouch for it working! It was the first job I had to
do a few months ago (in fear and trembling) when I started
with Xubuntu. It is quite instructive and breaks down
inhibitions...
