I do have a lot of extra computers, so I try about everything suggested after installing xubuntu 12.04. I dont use a laptop, but I suspect hibernate works about the same way internally both on laptop and desktop. I dont worry about a couple cents a day that it may or may not save me though either. Sometimes I just leave my machine on and go to bed. It does power down when screen saver kicks in anyhow. I do click off internet pages.

No, the xorg.file [1] is only needed to avoid screen blanking.

[1]
man xorg.conf informs that the default values are 10 minutes.
I had to add

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "BlankTime" "0"
Option "StandbyTime" "0"
Option "SuspendTime" "0"
Option "OffTime" "0"
EndSection

to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so that I could disable screen blanking by the
power manager settings, resp. since I don't need other power settings,
to enable/disable screen blanking by
(enable)
killall xfce4-power-manager ; xfce4-power-manager
(disable)
killall xfce4-power-manager
Without the xorg.conf entries screen blanking is active, even when the
values are set to disable screen blanking by the power manager while
it's running, or when it's killed. JFTR first I kill the power manager,
when I want to enable it, to ensure that only one instance will run,
when enabling it by a launcher.
The purpose though was to ensure any automated power savings etc was
turned off leaving only the manual option of locking screen. The end
result is see if it clears up the erratic actions of the PC. Once
cleared then hopefully we can systematically turn options on to see if
we can narrow down cause... or some mad logic of that sort where by the
OP may safely put his system to sleep. Something I should be doing
myself. :P
I understand but this is just troubleshooting by taking the automated
process out of the equation and then manually activating each process.
Tonight Lock Screen. Tomorrow night suspend. The following Sleep. etc.
Once you know which option cause the system to act up then you can avoid
it until a fix is found and turn the auto feature back on the ones that
work. Some such madness like that. :)
Aren't there any kernel logs, dmesg? What happens when manually
suspend/hibernate? What exactly is sleep/standby? I don't own a laptop,
however, suspend/hibernate on my PC worked a long time ago, but I guess
it doesn't work nowadays, haven't tested it for a long time, but I
remember issues.
