As suggested by Ralf I created an xorg.conf file with his Serverflags section, then setted the screen tab of the power manager to ?never? and it worked fine. Thanks, great community!!! The bash-impaired account can authenticate in lightdm and get to its desktop, so authentication is valid. I was successful in booting a CD into a LiveCD session and was able to access the internet and the forum to announce my success. That's it so far and my next step will be to try actually install it on the hard drive. Thank you to everyone who made suggestions here on xubuntu discussions. I changed the settings as suggested by G?rard but didn't have time yet to test it. On the other hand I tried to look up the xorg.conf file as suggested by Ralf but there is no "/etc/x11/" directory in my installation??? Could the file be somewhere else?? I deal with introducing linux to under privileged community , via xubuntu, and the machines they have access to often don't boot usb which at that age means no dvd but cd. The cure I end up with is burning a Plop cd which will find the usb thumbdrive for installation.
